Gunncat, thanks so much for emailing the ICANN guy. His reply is reassuring.
In terms of how much power the US gov has over domains... there's been discussion before that .com is governed by Georgia (I think?). I'm not sure if that will make a difference, as I think most people consider "dot-com" to be the universal, non-geographical domain. $60 is outrageous, but I'd rather pay the extortion money than miss out on a few vital domains...

I've never been particularly fond of ICANN in the past, and this does nothing to improve my opinion. Why the sudden interest on ICANN's part in approving new TLDs? Did we really need a .trav and an .xxx? |
