I use it on my link list, it's a very good script.

Do a search on the board for it as there has been a few threads about it.

There is an option that makes it much faster. We are using it on the board and once all php includes are done on all the pages, they will include the better code.

Could someone that knows what's what about phpads answer me these questions three?

Should someone with minimal server admin experience (namely, me) attempt to install phpads.

What are the implications of using it to serve ads on multiple domains on a single server. Can it be done, and how much does it effect server speed. I'm talking about a lot of domains here.

What... is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Thanks
SS

Well it has an auto install its easy as 123 all ya need is a mysql data base

As far as using it on other domains as long as they are on the same server but the jury is still out on it.

I use it across domains without problems.

You have to use the JavaScript option if you are going to use it across domains. Seems the JavaScript slows down the page loading. It really hasn't been a problem for me, but maybe it is because I never use more then about 3 insertions per page.

Also as MML said it is pretty much a self setup, but you do need to add a maintenance crontab. Very simple to do, but you do need Telnet or SSH access to your server for this.

Is there something else Jim that you found to speed it up or was it just not using the JavaScript option?

OK, I'm convinced. I read over the documentation too and it doesn't look that bad. I'll give it a try.

Thanks for the advice.

There are four different delivery options for displaying the banners. For best performance ALWAYS using "local delivery"

If you can

DoubleP was trying to help me set mine up that way but it didn't seem to work so I have had to use the java version

In the manual it says that local mode can only be used on php files or files that are 'parsed with php' - (which means nothing to me... yet - lol) and mine are on html or cgi so I assumed that was why...

It seems to make a massive difference to the speed for me, even with only two instances per page... same host as Cleo too! (Unless you're on a dedicated server of course...) so I haven't used it as much as I wanted to - shame because I could really use it right now!

You can setup your server to parse/read the PHP code inside of an .html file. Your SysAdmin should know how to set that up.

Much better than using javascript.

Just name your files .php instead of .html.

This looks pretty cool, but I've never used mySql before. I have a dedicated box at Candid so I assume I have mysql installed, but do I need to set something up, or configure something, or what? Is it something I can do or does the host have to do it for me?

help, I'm a mysql newbie |confused|

ChristyB,

heres a great little trick that will save your life. Put the following line of code in your .htaccess file

AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .htm

after this the server will parce the php code in your html pages

will work on all servers using apache. if it doesn't work talk to your admin.

to test it just put this line of code in your html file as it

<?phpinfo();?>

it will give you your server info if the .htaccess is correct

Thank you for the suggestions:

Cleo - Unfortunately that isn't an option I can use

{fusion} - I tried that & the server went nuts (it was was launching a local page every time I opened a web page or something equally weird) - lol - I've a feeling they don't use apache

Setting it to the fastest delivery method is easy except when trying to do it with vBulletin. You need to put a hack in vBulletin to get it to work.

Get someone that knows what they are doing to set it up for you. And, when you use the faster method, you can't use it across domains.

I don't use any javascript and I run it across several domains.

Under allowed Invocation types just check Allow Remote Invocation. That will run normal banners. The box below says Allow Remote Invocation for Javascript and I don't have that one checked.

Works fine for me this way.
