I'm guessing here, but I chmod'ed config.inc.php to 644 to lock it and make it unwritable. As for the maintenance thing, I hope the hell somebody can answer that, as I've yet to get it to run with cron. Alternatively, I've been just going to my maintenance.php each day manually .
