Meta Tags....Right and Wrong

How many times have you just copied em? Site gets general mark down on Altavista, Ask Jeeves, and Google. Other SE's dont seem to follow this rule. They have NO positive influence on ranking but to say they are ignored is wrong. Trust me I was working for a major UK automotive site that spent a fortune figuring it out!
