how are the temperatures in the cabinet?
It's very hot summer in denmark, and maybe it's the same in Holland? Does it show any message before it shuts down? Have you chosen the right category here on GG&J? |

Before Cleo posts, "Buy a Mac"
1. Double check your power. Swap power cords around. I know this sounds silly but I was flown 2,600 miles to push a plug at the end of an AS/400. 2. Make sure your graphics card does not think it's in SLI mode unless you have 2 graphic cards. 3. If any new service patches or hardward have been installed uninstall them. 4. The "unsecure active x" doesn't sound good. Try turning off Active X controls in IE and running Mozilla for a bit. |

![]() - At one place the techies left a cable running across the floor. So some nice person unplugged it and rolled it up out of the way. - Another place moved the PC that was part of a chain, and just left the 2 ends hanging. - And another place got a little careless when stapling cables to walls. |

I'd also try taking a look at the fan - check if it's full of dust, if yes, blow it out with compressed air.

*unplug everything first* wipe off the biggest dustballs with a dry cloth - then blow compressed air on the blades & in the center where it spins. Once you do that and if you don't have a cool enough room, you may want to place an extra fan around the computer to make sure it keeps the computer clear.

Stu, worst case scenario, if all the prior posts are inaffective in alleviating your distress, a sledghammer pounding does wonders for the spirits as well as destroys the object of your wrath.
You'll find that post destruction you are happy and in good cheer even though you just pounded the living shit out of a 2k peice of technology. |

![]() Fortunately, with a clearer head today I was able to isolate the problem and correct it. Built this machine 3 years ago and last night was the first time its ever given me a BSOD (blue screen of death...for the non-geeks). Stu, I feel your pain darlin...the heat issue could well be the source of your problems. While working on this machine today, I cleaned it out...was nasty in there ![]() |

have you done virus check? cause usually a sign of the computer keeps turning off is mostly because you have gotten a virus in your computer.

Along with removing dust - be sure the cpu fan over your processor chip is actually working. If it failed, then the system overheats and shuts down. Just remove the cover, aim a flashlight at it and see if it's spinning. While mucking about, see if your case can handle an additional case fan, no such thing as having too many.

Just for for checks. If i was you I would look over your event logs under system. I have never had a system keep rebooting over dust. I have has systems with almost 1/2 inch worth of crap in them cause they were not opened for years. I'm sure some of the networking people here can tell you the dust build up in a good running server is crazy. 99% of the time like mentioned before most reboot problems can be traced back to memory or MOBO problems. Right click my computer, go to manage, and then even viewer. look over the system logs about the time you had your reboots. Should give you a better idea. If a system is overheating it should not be able to boot to safemode. If your system is running in safe mode or reguler mode it is still going to run at the same temp. All safe mode does is disable certain programs and drivers from starting up. Drivers and programs do not cause heat in a system, well not so much that it would cause it to shut down. But either way good your system is running. But check those logs you might be surpised what you find out.
