I think a lot of US WM don't know about that. So German traffic is a great thing to have right now.
The way a German would have to go, when signing up to a German.de site is:
He can either varify his identity and age by:
Postident
- Visit the adult site (all softsoftsoftcore - also in wording)
- Sign Up
- Get to the AVS System
- Signup there
- Download a form for postident
- Go to the next Post/Mail Office
- Show your ID - get signature
- Fax or Mail to AVS
- Wait until you get your "dongle" (USB Stick with Pins) per mail !!!
- And now you're IN
BankIdent:
- Visit the adult site (all softsoftsoftcore - also in wording)
- Sign Up
- Get to the AVS System
- Signup there
- Typ in your Bank Acc details
- wait until they charge you some cents on your account (you get a transaction number with this charge)
- Go back to the AVS, type in the transaction number
- You're approved

These are just 2 examples how "easy" it is for someone to actually SIGNUP and SEE a .de Domain in hardcore - and there are a lot more ways - but all have one thing in common - it takes days
Also it prevents foreign visitors from to sign up at a german site -

Unless you're based outside of Germany and can provide German Sites/Content/Billing - you're done more or less.

There are for sure German users who went through all of that and are using .de sites - but I don't want to know how many of them don't
