The reason I didn't make it a popup was exactly what you said, nobody really believes it. Right now, Sparky says there are about .8% of surfers infected so, it really isn't a lot. Here is my thinking, if they are infected and you allow them to check out your site anyway, they are going to think you are screwing with them when sooner or later zango pops up...not zango. I think a popup claiming they are infected will just be closed and they will think again, you are screwing with them.

I made it generic so people really do believe what we are telling them. Hell, by the time they get there, they have got to be wondering what the hell has been happening anyway.

You are right about the only choice being remove it or move along. But some of the things I have been reading makes this even more important. There are children using these PCs that have been infected that are having these popups coming up when they use a search function. And, back to what I was saying, you are going to lose bookmarker if you do allow them on your site and zango pops up.

You guys can do anything you would like with the page I made. And even changed the htaccess code of you would like. If you would like to steal the page and use it another way, go for it. If you would like to redirect to a different page, go for that too.

I am going to keep searching for a "real" removal tool that would make things much better. I am also going to start working on the 450 other adware programs as I have time.

All I have really done is I have given everyone the tools to educate their surfers. You guys can do anything you want with it.

I have seen estimates ranging from 0.5% to 3%, but whatever the real figure, let's not forget that Zango is only one of more than 20+ scumware operations. Another way to provide some perspective is that we pay only 1% for things like "free" trading scripts which might otherwise cost hundreds of dollars.

I know we want to be doing something, but I cannot escape the feeling that this particular route risks us taking our eyes off the ball. Even if we can persuade a percentage of surfers to clean their PC's - and not damage ourselves in the process - we are unlikely to do much more than scratch the surface of the problem.

According to Business Week, scumware is a $2 billion a year industry and even if that is exaggerated and of course it includes mainstream business, these people are only middlemen: the actual value of the traffic which is being stolen is far higher.

IMO the only serious way to attempt to tackle this issue is by punishing the sponsors who are scumware customers and/or who turn a blind eye to affiliates who are. And that means not only pulling links from such sponsors, but by saying so publicly so that they can see what their activities are costing them.
