What most of the blog directories that require a recip link are missing

Hmm... their service plans don't offer unique IP's unless you go with the level four plan... but that's still pretty damn cheap.

Forgive me but what would the downside of not having unique IP's be please?

As long as they configure their virtual hosting correctly, probably next to nill, if anything at all. I was just thinking out loud.
