My Anti-Virus Picked Up A Worm Attempt

I was downloading content from a sponsor and my Norton Internet Worm Protection said someone tried to put a worm on my computer. The intruding source was 85.18.106.211 I really don't think it was the sponsor so how can I find out where this attack came from?

Can someone attack my computer without me being at a web site?

Sure.

There are tons of people/worms/bot randomly scanning ports on (random) IP ranges to find weak PC's to abuse.

Thanks. I didn't think the sponsor had anything to do with it.

If you have open ports on your system, you're definitely a target for the malicious bastards out there

I highly recommend running the Shields Up port scanner at GRC to test your ports. It's part of what I do on any system I lock down.

Shields Up

Also, these days Norton is not the best security software out there. Frankly, it's gotten too bloated and misses things

Open ports are harmless by themselves. Non-secure and vulnerable applications using those ports are the real problem.

Whatever the problem is - firewalls are a must have.

Indeed true....until a port scanner finds one and exploits it.

Completely agree on firewalls...gotta have a condom on ones computer these days

I don't guess a "keyboard condom" is what you're referring to is it

Thanks for that link Mr. Yum. It said 0 ports open, 0 ports closed, 1,056 ports Stealth. I guess I'm OK, all boxes were green

That's the desired result...you don't want port scanners to even know you're there. The ports aren't open...they aren't closed, they just plain don't respond
