That is one of my personal pet peeves. The generation that brought us flower power, free love and taught us to watch out for "the man" is now the generation that seems to have absolutely no problem with restricting and even trampling on personal freedoms every chance the get.

I have a small theory about this. Have you ever noticed that born-again Christians were the most fucked-up out of control people you knew before they suddenly found religion? Every born-again that I know, and I know a few, were druggies, alcoholics, and womanizers. One day, these cocksuckers wake up and, due their minds being destroyed by years of drugs and alcohol, believe they've had some sort of religious epiphany, and find themselves drawn to their newest addiction: church. In their new life, the only way they can deal with the unhealthy level of guilt which they feel over their past, is to persecute anyone who is currently doing the things that they feel destroyed their own lives. There are few things worse than a burned-out asshole with a holier than thou attitude. (like my fucking brother-in-law)

Possibly true, but I believe the reality is that most of the "churches" which dabble in politics are essentially vehicles for those who operate them. And as Bush has now proved in two elections, these days emotive topics and slogans build audiences much faster and more surely than voices of logic and reason.

If you want to make money and wield power in the US today, there isn't a quicker or more certain way than by building a congregation based on prejudice. Sad, but that is the way it is...

I couldn't agree more. Many are still very extreme ... just in the other direction. A pendulum swings with the same amount of momentum acquired in the first swing - over time, maybe they'll come back down to a healthier balance, but usually not the ones who are still in full swing.

What sucks is over time these ideas become more cemented in their brains and while others hope for that extreme attitude to die down, it really becomes more difficult to undo...like Google's logarithmic PageRank algorithm and acquiring more page rank. lol. (there goes my focus.)
