Lightbulb Question about 'Excessive Ads'

A semi newbie question here, but based on a good many years of general webmaster experience.

Now whilst I fully appreciate the requirement not to have ‘Excessive Ads’ surely this is dependant on the type of ads! Obviously nobody wants to see a page overloaded with Sponsor Ads, but what about Traffic Generating Ads?

Sure I can build pages until the cows come home that fit strictly within the requirements. That means a page with just Link List Links on it, and of course the obligatory ‘No More than 3 Sponsor Ads’ plus I can build pages with Links for other Traffic Sources on it and no Link List Links, and never shall the two pages meet! But why not?

Surely this is just stagnating, I know none of us like to give traffic away, but isn’t there such a thing as Speculate to Accumulate? Or is this an area of the business where we’re a little too selfish and greedy to push the boat out a little further?

I wouldn’t call this post a rant, but for those who think it is, Rant Over!

I guess what it comes down to is on your own site you can put as many banners or links as you wish but when you submit to a link list you play by the owner's rules. Rules like three outbound links, 20 pic minimum or a maximum 800x600 resolution all just have lives of their own. They have a certain inertia to them and they are difficult to change.

I wouldn't argue with that at all! However, changing the rules on minimum number of pics or the pic size for instance, wouldn't really move things forward in any way. But allowing more traffic generating links could.

I'm not saying that I'm unhappy with the rules, if I want to submit then I abide by those those rules (or I give it try to see if it works, which I did and got rejected LOL). I'm just, I dunno, thinkout out side the box here!

Are you getting into whether it's better to run a strict LL type site or something that's a bit more open like a directory/portal type site?

I like what UW is doing with his PerveSpace. In fact, I'm getting myself set up to copy some of what he's done, and to start seeing just how outside the box he's willing to go with his submits.

Yeah I guess it is about how a LL is/could be run. Bottom line is that can do what they want on their own LL. All I'm doing is is asking, could another door be opened?

I'm not sure what you mean by "traffic generating ads"? Can you please explain and maybe give an example of what you have in mind? I'm not a LL owner, just wondering what you mean.

I'm always agreeable on new things. This sort of issue has come up before. Some folks asked if it would be ok to do link trades on their free sites. I said "sure", some said "no way". It didn't really work out that well. I seemed as if everyone was linking out from their free sites and not really linking back to them. In other words, they were leaching the PR they were getting from their linklist listings to promote other sites.

The other side of that coin is that most search engines don't like stagnant sites. I'd love to see the freesites that I'm listing get changed occasionally, new inbound links, etc. The problem there is I can see all the cheaters out there rubbing their hands together and snickering, just dreaming of all the ways they can abuse something like that.

I have to give it some thought. Maybe just let your trusted submmitters do that (yes, I have one of those lists too ) and tell everyone else to pound sand.
