WTF how is anyone suprised???

Rings,' Depp, Theron Win Top Actors Guild Awards:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A cast of Hollywood hobbits and a "Monster" killer played by Charlize Theron (news) won top honors at the Screen Actors Guild (news - web sites) awards on Sunday, but a fishy pirate portrayed by Johnny Depp (news) stole the show in an upset best actor victory.

But Depp's victory added an element of suspense to next week's Oscars (news - web sites) by giving him an award no one expected over favorites Bill Murray (news) and Sean Penn (news).

Depp, who played the wild-eyed and fanciful Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," was not on hand, but backstage Al Pacino (news), who won the actor award for his role in cable TV mini-series "Angels in America," amplified the shock of everybody in the crowd.

He lifted an eyebrow and declared himself "really surprised" and "really thrilled."

"He's done so many interesting parts over the years that he got a reputation for being quirky, but he really wasn't. He's a fine actor," Pacino said.

Personally I'm not suprised in the least that the greatest actor on earth won an award. Seriously nobody is more deserved of winning best actor at the oscars that Johnny. I do have a soft spot of Sean Penn, but Johnny is far more superior than any actors of his generation. |band

I disagree.

I like Depp, and I like Penn.

I'm also a huge fan of Pirates and have read a lot of stories and documentaries on pirates, so I was looking forward to this movie.

And I have just watched Pirates of the Caribbean 3 days ago. and I have to say I was not impressed at all. Yes, it was a good movie, Depp did well, and he was "entertaining" but to give him a “SAG” or an academy award for it? Not a chance IMHO.

The role did not warrant that sort of thing. I see these awards as an actor taking it to the next level, no matter what the story is. And Depp did not do that with this role. He has in other roles, but not in this one.

Penn has once more taken it to the next level and he should get the Academy award, and if not him, then for sure Bill Murray, who also took it to the next level.

I’m sure Depp will be back, and hopefully then he will deserve to win, but if he should win it this time, I will just see it as a popularity contest. Which, I’m thinking that all it is anyway nowadays.

So am I Torn, I swear to god I am a huge Pirate fan myself. I have seen/own
Pirates of Penzance (my favorite movie of all time, about as historically accurate as I am skinny)
Pirates of the Carribean(sp)
Muppet Treasure Island (watched this one last night and sang along with the songs!!! heh heh)
I want to buy a Mutiny on the Bounty as well and the older versions of Treasure Island, if the wife lets me.
But your right about this newest one, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but was also disappointed by it.
