At first I didn't know much about wine and it really annoyed me when I would buy up a bottle and it would be bad. So I did what I normally do when I want to get better at something, I start to read about. Now I get a magazine that highlights wines available in Canada (where I live) and it shows me what is good (and inexpensive) to drink. (So when it gets right down to it, I am a cheap bastard and I hate buying bad wine so I decided to adapt!)

I like reds from Chile and Argentina (Malbec esp). White and Reds (esp Shiraz) from Australia are good too. Despite be reasonably far north, Canada's Niagara region makes some great whites.

With a good magazine that has tasting notes you can try to see if you can pick out the different flavours that the reviewer found. Start here:

http://www.erobertparker.com/
http://www.winespectator.com/Wine/Home/
http://www.wineaccess.ca/ (This is a Canadian magazine and it will indicate if a wine reviewed in available your province.)

Here are a couple I am drinking now:

Weinert 2003 Malbec Mendoza, Argentina C$18.95 (red) and Pratello Catulliano 2006 Lugana Italy C$15.95 (white). (We pay a lot of tax in Canada on alcohol so in the States you'd likely get this for 2/3 to 1/2 of the Canadian price. Ouch!)

Yeah, I went there the first couple of years when it was held at the Convention Centre. It was good because I could take public transit home. I think they then moved it to near the airport which doesn't work because then I'd need a driver or $50 for a cab. Oh well.

I was at one in Toronto about 20 years ago. I think it was at the convention center or some big in door place.
