Hello all! Cleo, it is great you hear you are feeling better.

I found a coffee shop with free Wifi so I decided to read the morning thread while on vacation in Fenlon Falls which is about 1 1/2 north east of Toronto. Just stuff with my family today. I am writing a book on Ubuntu Linux for beginners so maybe I can spend a few hours on that.

Have a great day everyone!

Is there a way to make it do wireless connections on laptops. The last time I tried, it didn't go so well.

If your wifi card is supported, it relatively easy. If not you have to use Ndiswrapper which allows you to use the Windows drivers under Linux. Linux supports more hardware than Windows but sadly it does not always support the latest hardware. That is where people get fucked. If you have an older machine (>18 months) chances are that Linux will work under it. There are Live CDs which allow you find out if you machine is well supported (and no hard disk install is required).

Depends on your chipset really. I've run atheros cards in my laptops since 2001 using the madwifi project. As art also mentioned, ndisdrivers do work with ndiswrapper.

Now, the really interesting thing is that Atheros hired two of the main guys from the madwifi project, and have decided to open up their API to the open source community so that the madwifi (and the ath5k/ath9k) project will be included in the kernel and widely accepted. The ndisdriver's are also getting much more mature. In 2002, I used ndisdriver from Driverloader with a broadcom wireless card and it has worked fine for years. 2.6.27-rc1-mm1 fixes a rather longstanding bug with my nephew's atheros card. Small bug in the kernel with his ati card, otherwise he'd have compiz working and he could have a desktop that looked and acted just like a mac. His hda_intel sound card also has an issue which had a patch posted yesterday, but, that doesn't apply cleanly to his kernel, so, he's got to wait on that. Bet you can't tell I've been working on kernels for the last two days haha.

Art, have you considered selling it as an ebook, or do you have a publisher for it?

For me, a little more benchmarking, but, I believe I have most of the issues worked out on my latest bump in the road. Time to move on to the next step.

Cleo, you have the worst luck with illnesses in Florida. FanTC, I admire your spirit and hopefully the courts will go easy on you.

Have a good Tuesday everyone.
