"WASHINGTON - Owners of the iPhone will be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple. The government is making that legal under new rules announced Monday.

The decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works. Every three years, the Library of Congress authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material."

So iPhone jailbreaking voids the warranty!

The U.S. Copyright Office's ruling making iPhone jailbreaking legal doesn't really matter, as long as the process voids the warranty of your smartphone. Apple reminded customers in a statement to Cult Of Mac that jailbreaking their iPhones voids the device's warranty, which means no free repairs if your phone goes bust because of that.

So how come unlocked phones are OK in Canada, but unlocked phones void the warantee in the USA???

The unlocked version of the phone, which will sold by Apple directly on its website and through it's Apple Stores

There is a difference between the iPhone getting unlocked through iTunes by Apple and doing it through an unsupported software hack.

In fact last I heard there is no hack for the iPhone 4 to unlock it.
