The best answer for that question is to point out that there is no proof that God exists, but there is also no proof that he does not exist. So only a complete moron would answer either "yes" or "no" to that question.

But pointing out to them that having any belief either way would make them a moron usually shuts them up before they start!

I do not believe he exists, but who am I to state that as a fact?

The word believe is a key here.
