Had to attend an evening of lectures on kidney transplants. Doctors telling us what will happen, the various options available, people who have had the operation talking about it, etc....

The one surprise was the information that a kidney transplant is "cost effective" for the health service. In Britain we get all our medical expenses paid by the state (except dental, which is subsidised but not free) and most of the cost of our medication paid (we pay ~$18 per prescription, but one prescription can be several months worth of medicine, so a bargain). And the cost to the state in treating someone with dead kidneys is so great that a kidney transplant is a lot cheaper. So the evening was also designed to encourage us to go for the operation as soon as sensible (assuming a kidney is available).
