I have some dating sites. There's a LOT of competition. Like most adult sites, you need to choose an under-developed niche/sector and exploit it yourself. Consider also setting up a dating site for just people in your area (state, county, province). You'll have competition but not as much and, because you cover a specified area, you can actually compete with larger sites that don't. For instance, say you live in New York. Your surfer is more likely to join an NY dating site than a worldwide site.

Be prepared not to make a cent though for 18 months

18 months might be a little exageration. Although, yes depending on layout, it can be a while before your site breaks even. The main thing to consider is how do you justyify charging for a dating service when the likes of AFF have 100Ks of members? Many new dating sites actually start of 100% free. When they have 5 to 10 K members, they then turn on an option in their script manager, allowing surfers to upgrade at a price (at this point, certain once free features are disabled : internal email, chat rooms, etc). This is why starting a dating service aimed at your own locality (state, province, county) is a better business plan. YOu can start charging with fewer members. I my experience, it's VERY easy to use PPC for targetting to your local dating site.
