Search & Replace

Does anyone know of a decent program that will search & replace a line of text (code) in an entire directory of pages?

I have several that will do one page at a time but am looking for one that will do multiple pages at once..

Thanks in advance :-)

Hey don't forget to submit some galleries too :-)

Frontpage will do it, just before you replace there is an option to replace on 1 single page or all open pages, just choose all open pages (only ofcourse after those pages are open), same goes for Cute FTP Pro 5.0 edit the pages you want to change in the editor, do a find and replace function and choose on All Open Pages, instead of one single page.

Thanks Extreme John! I don't use those programs but I'll take a look at them - I really appreciate the quickness of your reply - I'm hoping for Mrs. Extreme John that you don't do EVERYTHING that quick :-)

OK that gets you a big hug!!

If you know exactly where the links are - then use CuteFTP - it can load up to at least 250 pages at a time and replace (real slow - but faster than you typing)

If you don't know exactly where the links are, bk replacem - will scan entire domains and subfolders.
Though you have to download the whole domain and re upload.
Not a big deal if you have command line access and can tar, zip and have a fast connection.

Here's a freeware that I use for last couple of years - "Search & Replace 98" (don't let the name fool you, works with winxp). You can replace single or multiple lines. 1 file or whole folders/sub-folders.

http://www.htmlworkshop.com/srhtml98.html

Try it, I'm sure you'll like it |rasta|

I haven't signed up yet but I'm going to check it out later tonight... (there, I should get back in your good graces now right :-)

And to think I gave you a virtual hug! see there :-)

For search and replace you could try Textpad

All you have to do is copy & paste or drag and drop the whole directory of files into it.

And then search & replace, takes about 10 seconds to do 150 pages. Then save all and upload.

abbieD,

The best one I have seen that works locally is HotDog's 'Multi File Find & Replace.. but it comes with a big price tag...

I now use and reccomend - Abacre - Advanced Find and Replace - http://www.abacre.com/afr/index.htm - Spend the 30$ it will pay for itself 10x over..

Pick what you want to replace, point it at a Dir and press go... DONE

You guys are the GREATEST!!!
I have about 640 files to update for someone else's site today and I'm sure I'll save about 8 hours worth of time.

I should have been to bed 4 hours ago, but thanks to you guys, I've had tons of reading to keep me warm. When the man of the house asks what I was doing up so late tonight, I'm going to blame all of you :-)

Seriously, thanks a bunch! You've all been a great big help

Hi AbbieD

I'd have replied, but this is the 1st time I'm seeing the post - LOL - I've been rather ill the last few days & this is my 1st full board read-thru in the last 24 hours.

Skye already mentioned it, but I too use Search & Replace from http://www.funduc.com/

I think Jim does it thru his web editor, which was one of the 1st replies, so that's probably why he didn't reply (no need to say the same thing twice - LOL)

Just to chime in, on my own computer, nothing beats HomeSite for multileveled S&R.

If anyone is interested in a *server side* script, I once had the folks at PHP Labs create for me a little ditty that allows you to S&R throughout every domain and subdir on your web account. It is very handy for changing out sponsor links. It is also very dangerous (like any S&R) in that you better know what you are doing first. But if you are careful then that server-side Replacer can save incalcuable hours if not days of time.

It's free with a membership that includes 40 other scripts, btw. http://www.phplabs.com/scripts.php?s...ef=dirtygloves if anyone's interested.
