I design my pages in Namo with blank images as place holders & then run the pics thru Thumbs Plus & create a dummy page for the thumbs/links. I then copy & paste the thumbs from the dummy page to the gallery page & you're all set

First I use ReName to rename my pics with chosen keywords, unless I'm feeling lazy. I use Arles for thumbs creation and to resize/optimize the full pics. I run the images through ThumbsPlus using their webpage wizard cause it produces a much cleaner html table than Arles. Then I toss the thumbs that ThumbsPlus created and use the Arles ones. I also use Photoshop to to optimize some tricky pics that need to be forced to my optimization targets. The graphics I use are built with Photoshop as well. It's a convoluted system, but it works.

Don't let a programmer design your front-end pages!

Very similar way here: I create my gallerie templates with an old-fashioned text-based html editor, graphics with PaintShop 7, and thumbnail tables with ThumbsPlus... But then I run two small vb scripts over the entire stuff.
One to change the stupid long names from ThumbsPlus [like tn_pic01l_jpg.jpg] into something simpler and to alter the html slightly;
the second to replace image names, dimensions, etc. on the gallery page [I try to keep individual image names for each gallery, unlike many who always use something like pic01-pic20 for each and every post - e.g. helps me to find already published images].

Useless Warrior - why don't you like ThumbsPlus' thumbs? I think they're usually excellent considering their high compression...
Only if I'm in the mood (or I'm using sponsor content) do I sit down and make my thumbs by hand.

Well, ThumbsPlus is pretty simple. You just select the folder of images you want to use. Use it's webpage wizard and it will walk you through the quick process, telling it what size thumbs you want, jpg or gif, where do you want them, how many columns and row in your tables, etc. Hit the button and it instantly thumbs the pics and creates your thumb table page. However, you still need to know basic HTML to alter the layout enough for ads and recips.
I take a slower multi program route because my galleries are for free sites. I rename the pics with a keyword or two. I add alt and title tags to all of the thumbs and graphics. I move the tables around for aesthetic reasons and to allow for odd shaped banners or text blurbs. I apply CSS to my text, links and thumb borders. You can go from a very simple table layout to a huge HTML monster in no time.
