Notable occurrences from 1918

End of WWI
Russia's Czar Nicholas II, his empress and their five children were executed by the Bolsheviks
Four Baseball Hall of Famers were born including Boston's Ted Williams and Bobby Doerr (others are Bob Feller and Pee Wee Reese)
During the 7th-inning stretch of Game 1 of the World Series, a military band plays "The Star Spangled Banner" and Boston's Fred Thomas, on leave from the Navy, snaps to attention. From then on, the song is played at every World Series game, every season opener, and whenever a band is present to play it, though it is not yet adopted as the national anthem. The custom of playing it before every game will begin during WW II, when the installation of public address systems makes it practical.

Meet me in Saint Louie
NHL: In 1970, Harry Sinden's Bruins defeated Scotty Bowman's Blues by sweeping St. Louis, 4-0.
NFL: The Patriots won their 1st Super Bowl in the 2001 season (SB XXXVI) vs St. Louis Rams.
NBA: The Celtics won their 1st NBA title in 1957 vs St. Louis Hawks.

Year of the breakthrough?
Droughts broken in 2004:

Phil Mickelson was 0-42 in majors AS A PRO before his win at the Masters
Peyton Manning was 0-3 in the playoffs before beating the Broncos (was looking to avoid joining Y.A. Tittle as only 0-4 QBs). Manning also topped the Chiefs the following week.
Kevin Garnett was 0-6 in playoff series before the T'Wolves beat the Nuggets (Garnett joined Chris Dudley and Jerry Sloan as the only players to win their first series in their 7th attempt).
Dave Andreychuk appeared in 1,753 games (reg. and postseason) before his first Stanley Cup (an NHL record).
The Astros were 0-7 in postseason series before their win (was the worst playoff record in MLB)
Northwestern defeated Ohio State for the first time since 1971 (snapping a 24-game losing streak to OSU, the longest streak in Big Ten history).
USC won a share of the National Championship for the 1st time since 1978 -- LSU for the 1st time since 1958.
Calgary Flames made the playoffs for the first time since 1996 (ending the longest active drought in NHL).
Canadian team (Flames) reached Stanley Cup Finals for 1st time since 1994 (Canucks), ending longest streak without an Canadian team.
Dodgers win a postseason game for the first time since 1988, made the playoffs for 1st time since 1996.
Washington State won AT UCLA in basketball for the first time ever (snapping 47-game losing streak).

We'll get 'em next year

Cubs still haven't won a World Series since 1908.
Navy still hasn't beaten Notre Dame since 1963 (41 straight losses).
Texas has lost five straight to Oklahoma.
City of Philadelphia still hasn't had a pro team win a title since 1983 (longest drought of any team with four pro teams).
Still no Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
