Servers Pros & Cons

Looking for feed back on the choices between a Virtual Dedicated Server vs. Dedicated Server? I've heard that I can host multiple sites on booth at the same time. Within the next 3-6 months I plan to have at least three sites up. 1) For the Production company 2) Membership paysite 3) An Online store. Looking for advice from you folks that have been doing this for a while. Thank in advance.

I'd start on a VDS.

You can save a lot of time and money with a VDS.
With a VDS you don't have to worry about your server config/setup/securitypatches all of this is taken care of for you.
Thus, enabling you to spend more time on your web site development.

You can get a free VDS for a year @
http://www.getmoneyquick.info/click/?id=jumpline
specs:
· 2 GB Disk Space
· 30 GB Bandwidth Transfer
· 150 POP Email Accounts
· Dedicated IP Address
· Host 20 Domains/Virtual Hosts
· 10 FTP Accounts

or if you insist on paying for a VDS check out
http://www.getmoneyquick.info/click/?id=hostgator
· 100GB storage
· 1,000GB Bandwidth
· $9.95/month

If you are pretty good at server administration then I'd go with a dedicated

http://www.getmoneyquick.info/click/?id=serverpronto
$29 gets you:
· AMD 2000+
· 256 MB DDR RAM
· 40 GB Hard Drive
· 200 GB Data Transfer
· 100Mbps Connection

I currently host with all 3 of the hosting providers I've mentioned above and I'm happy with them all !

Dedicated server I think is best if you are doing things like a paysite, online store and other things that might require various scripts and wahtnot. If it is just for free sites and galleries then virtual is fine.

And if you get dedicated you do not have to manage anything or worry about configurations. A good host will manage all that for you.

Hello Forcefed,

The differences between the various levels of hosting (Shared/Virtual, Virtual Private Server (VPS), and Dedicated) basically all comes down to the expense vs the resources. At the low end you have shared accounts where you only receive limited amounts of resources but for a small price. At the other end of the spectrum where your costs are increased but 100% of the server's resources are yours.

Shared accounts are great in that they are managed by the host but the limited resources can really be a potential problem. If you expect to grow beyond the shared environment try and choose a host that can migrate you seamlessly to a larger account when the time comes. If you are doing adult then be sure and choose a host that allows adult content and is familiar with the utilization of resources that adult sites can demand, there is nothing worse than having your account turned off and terminated by a host not prepared for this. Finally with a shared you also run the risk that one of the other accounts on the server will do something or runs a script that shuts you and the whole server down.

VPS accounts are a step up from shared and you get dedicated resources assigned to your account. For example with the account you might receive 128 mb of RAM and 5 GB of HDD space. Your space is partitioned separately from other customers on the server so that even if there sites go down yours can remain in operation.

Finally with Dedicated Hosting all of the servers resources are yours and you don't have to worry about another client taking down your server. Obviously since the resource allocation is yours you can optimize the server to perform its best for your applications.

Each level of hosting has its purpose and most companies due to budget constraints will start out using Shared hosting and then graduating to larger resources as the business grows.

Forcefed I hope that this has helped. To get my plug in http://www.caro.net has all three choices of hosting available and given the chance I would certainly like to earn your business. We currently have some great specials available including your first month FREE on our shared accounts and 48 hour FREE test drives of our dedicated servers and the network.

Good luck with your business and if you have any other hosting questions I will always be glad to help.

If you are doing a membership paysite, then you absolutely must do a dedicated server. Anything else is unacceptable.

The reason for this is if you are on a shared server you can be hurt by things totally out of your control, such as scripts run by other people on the same server.

if you are promoting sponsor programs, you are not in the same kind of mission ciritical type business as running a paysite itself.

There are tons of companies such as NationalNet and Chilihost who do an excellent job of helping customers with dedicated servers.

Frankly, I am not a big fan of virtual dedicated for the foregoing reasons. It comes down to your business plan, and based on what you are saying here, you need a dedicated server.

Good luck!

Matt

just add my 1c...

faster processors do not translate to faster sites... at 256 mb of ram for a moderately sized website your server will be swapping to disk so often that under moderate load your site will crawl depending on what else is running on that machine...
