Anybody else getting these?

I got this from three different domain registrars in the last few days. Anybody else getting these?

Dear Jason Quinlan,

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, requires all
accredited registrars to remind their domain registrants to annually review
their domain name WHOIS contact information to ensure that it's accurate and
current. This email is being sent to you in order to verify the accuracy of
your domain's WHOIS data. It does not mean that your information has been
found to be innacurate.

Please visit
https://secure.directnic.com/****************** to verify that your registration information is correct.

If your review indicates that all of your domain contact information is
accurate, then no further action is necessary.

Please remember that under the terms of your registration agreement, The provision of false contact information can be grounds for cancellation
of your domain name registration under ICANN regulations. If any of your
domain contact information is inaccurate, you must update it.

If you have any questions please contact us at support@directNIC.com.

For more information concerning the ICANN policy mandating this annual review
please visit http://www.icann.org/registrars/wdrp.htm

Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
DirectNIC.com Support

Yeah I've gotten a few.

Isn't there some new law or something about it needing to be real info or something like that?

Yeah. If your info is good, you don't need to do anything. They send out a certain number of these a couple of times a year, something like a random sampling of domain owners. I forget the exact numerical details.

If your info isn't accurate, it's a vulnerability you should fix.

My info is good, I just check them to make sure there's been no rules changes and then ignore them.

I got one for couple of domains that are up for renewal in November.

" As of October 31, 2003 we are required by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to send you this reminder by the Anniversary date of each registered Domain Name that is subject to the terms and conditions of that organization. "

Believe me, I had received a couple of notices as well. Wrote namecheap about it - waiting for a response about this.

You can never be too sure...

Jay - it is a new US law that all domain info has to be correct - and some registrars are actually following the law and checking (as stated above randomly). DirecNic just happens to be one of the best and they do send these out - I received a second one yesterday as well - IM usually suspicious so I log in not using the link in the email LOL - but I know all of my domain have accurate whois info.

Its just the first step in the governments drive to be able to contact any porn webmaster they want for 2257 LOL (Just kiddin)

http://www.techlawjournal.com/topsto...4/20040921.asp
Where it was recently passed by the House of Rep - Im not positive it has actually been signed into law but if the house has approved it it might as well be

You may just be kidding, but I agree with that 100%. I didn't want to be the first one to say that on the boards, seeing as my last post about being worried about 2257 went over so well.

I am curious if www.jesus.com is getting these as well.

Jay - actually - the driving force behind the registrars doing it right now is a new ICAAN policy (actually 2003) that required registrars to do this). The idea behind the House bill was more aimed at the terrorists (go figure they'd find another use for that word) being able to host their sites in the US with fake whois - and the Justice Dept not being able to track them - at least its the excuse they're using - among a few others like identity theft and copywrite law - its amazing the ways they take when want to drive the 1st amendment into the ground

I got one for every Directnic account I have. Wish I could merge all of my domain names under one account, but they don't seem willing to do that based on the lack of email response.

I get 'em from directnic, godaddy, and networksolutions.

I wonder what they do if you don't click the link in e-mail or it goes into your spam box by accident?

Yep, I may have clicked the report as SPAM button on a couple of those accidentally. Have fun trying to get them out of the shared ISP spam filters now.

I think it's preperation for law enforecement too. Maybe not related to 2257 though.

I've been meaning to go find out what the rules from verisign actually say about whois info since these started coming.. hate to have any domains ripped from under me because of some dumb registration error that could be avoided.

I think they are (smartly) avoiding legal hassles by putting the onus on the domain holder to have correct information. If the info isn't correct, I think they can pretty much pull the domain directly and settle issues.

Too many scammers and spammers are using BS domain info. This will potentially make it faster for those domains to get pulled out of service.

(too bad, I use to have domains registered to the mens room at a london subway station, but I digress...)
