Sunday, Fun Day! (Oct-20-2013)

Good morning.

Locked down my server so that I can only access root from my laptop with a ssh key -- no passwords (after changing Port 22 to something else of course.) I managed how to do all that yesterday so I feel like I accomplished something. I also finished up that mainstream site I've been working on.

Today, I've got a friend whose PC is all messed up. She has a new one now but I am going to get her files off the old one today. She backed up to a cloud service but an Win 7 EasyTransfer would be cleaner if I can do it.

Finally, my son is coming over for dinner so that will be nice.

Have a great day whatever you do!

I have ssh keys on all my stuff. Makes accessing it so much easier and is necessary if you want to do automatic nightly backups

No messed up PCs here. Actually no PCs at all.

Went for a painful 3.25 mile bike ride over to Subway last night. Probably going to do it again tonight. Christy went kayaking without me this morning. Bummed that I couldn't go with her. Might go over to the gym and do some leg machines this morning although I'm still pretty sore from last night so not sure if it is a good idea or not.

We are having unusual high tides and on our bike ride last night we stopped on top of a badge to watch the tide rushing in. What made it interesting was that the tide was still coming in and the water was already so high that it was going over the seawall.

Other than that going to do some light work and dust, sweep and mop our bedroom and the kitchen.

Home Schoolin' Today

Oh God, back to school day. It is a Sunday and I is doin' book learnin' on a Sunday!

All my eBooks are in PDF form, and for over a year now I have intended to drag them screaming and kicking into the 21st century. Most good eReaders can read PDF files, but most eReader owners don't know this (and many of those that do, don't want to use PDF files). So only offering PDF files is costing me money! However every time I look into converting I think "Fuck it, this is not worth the effort".

Of course, I am lying to myself, it is worth the effort. Many $$$$$ worth the effort. But I am a lazy bastard, and money ain't so bad that I have to do book learnin' to make more.

But today, I have decided, I have to spend time working out how to create ePub and Mobi (Kindle) files of all my books. Then I'm gonna have to spend the next few weeks creating the bloody things (about 100 books at a rough estimate).

God, even the thought of it is enough to turn me to drink.

Good morning world

Took a relaxation day yesterday so today I'll be working most of the daylight hours and then it'll be dinner and the couch for Homeland, Boardwalk Empire and the Walking/Talking Dead. Though one or more of those may have to be watched later if I don't get in a nap before dinner.

@ecchi - Looks like you shouldn't have too tough a time converting those pdf files.

@Cleo - hope your leg starts feeling better soon.

Wishing a good day to all.

Good morning, afternoon and evening to all. I just got back from my offline work, I had to do some extra hours today so I'll stay ahead a little for the next week.
As much for the online stuff I had to say that more and more I'm getting SE hits from Bing.
Also I think that Bing is getting more relevant now than Google.
I'm off to eat a lunch with my better half and the we are both off to our friend for supper
Have a good one.

The problem is not finding the software, it is learning to use it. This is made worse by the fact that most help files work on the theory that the user has been doing the job for years with a different piece of software, so only needs to be told how this software differs from similar products.

I got ePub worked out but Mobi is a bit of a bastard. So gave up and went out to got some fried chicken. I've eaten it, and am now trying to come up with other excuses not to get back to work. Which is why I am posting here instead of working out how to create mobi files!

Hello afternoon. Chargers beat up on the Jaguars. Lots of injuries though so hopefully with a week off people can get healthy.

Other than being really tired because of the baby things are pretty good. Had mom over yesterday and along with a lot of college football we watched the movie Oblivion. I had heard how bad this movie was. However, with expectations of around -3843094 it actually wasn't that bad. For a rental at the end of the day I was alright with it.

Alright now to gear up to watch colts vs denver. Nice. Along with doing some code as well.

I actually downloaded League of Legend and played the tutorial. Looks to be decent fun. So I might try some co-op of that late tonight.

Hope everyone is having a good one.

OK so here is why you should never try to teach an old dog new tricks:

I got through working out how to create and read ePub books. And I eventually managed to create a Mobi file with a lot of swearing and trial and error (lousy software manual). However when I tried to test my mobi file by reading it on Kindle for PC there was no option to open books direct from your hard drive. It only let you log into your Amazon account and read books stored there. I struggled with it for a while, then searched on Google for a long time, no luck. Eventually I went on Amazon's Kindle Help Forum and posted a question about this. This morning I got a reply:

When you download / open them with your pc choose 'open with kindle for pc'. You can also set it as the default application to open those types of files if you want
How thick can I be? I open files via Windows Explorer all the time, but I was so set on opening mobi files via Kindle for PC that I never even thought of trying this! Ironically I found that Kindle for PC had made itself the default program to open mobi files when I installed it!

It seems I don't just need to learn how to create ePub and mobi files, I need to take a course on the basics of using a computer!
