The only book I ever had to read in High School was "The catcher in the rye". Still got it somewhere stuffed between my Raymond E. Feist collection.

Pretty much anything written by Heinlein is "required reading", but this one is definitely a keeper. I lost/misplaced my hardback edition several moves ago. Originally read it about 20 years ago - need to grab a new copy and re-read it.

Read?

When I was at the Presidio of Monterey I read Hesse's Demian in German, twice. I have no idea what that book is about.

No shit...I was at Fort Ord and a neighborhood friend was at the Presidio learning Russian. Until the army found out he smoked weed.

Between that and the little red book they were the top "had-to" read stories back in the 60s - we had whole church movements based on that book that just knew in the future there would be so much govt intervention as to really change our way of thinking - hey it really came to pass didnt it

It was funny that when we discussing the book (not in school - they wouldnt have allowed it back then) the major differences that came to light between the people that got it and those that didnt - sorta like the old animal farm story - some people still think that was just a story about animals on a farm LOL - (linkster goes off singing Beasts of England to himself)

Feist is one of the best writers I've ever read. The Riftwar Saga ranks right up there with Lord of the Rings in my book.
