I rent, but my goal is to have put enough cash aside to put a deposit on a house within a year or two. Prices where I live are pretty high, the 3 bedroom semi-detached I now live in costs me around $1600 a month to rent, going rate to buy is around $500k for a decent place, $300k for a shitty one. Funny thing is it would be cheaper for me paying off a mortgage, it's just getting that damned deposit together in the first instance.
