I've seen a lot that have a "campaign" option where you can assign a number or letters to each link code so that it's tracked separately from the total stats.

Same here, although I've only tried it a couple of times on two different sponsors to see if it worked. And it did.

That's exactly what we do, I always give freesites a unique tracking id, gives a good overview from what converts and what not
