Facing untrue and unsubstantiated criminal charges is something I hope nobody here ever has to go through (if they haven't already). I was in a position many years ago where I was accused of things I didn't do, didn't actually break any laws as they were written, but a judge and prosector were going after my boss and decided that they were going to interpret a couple laws as THEY would have written them as opposed to how they were ACTUALLY written in order to screw both me and a co-worker.
I was in the right. I was 100% not guilty of what I was charged with. I took a plea to a bullshit misdemeanor. If I had lost at trial I would have absolutely had grounds for an appeal, but I didn't have the money to fight, nor was a willing to take a chance that I was going to sit in jail waiting for an appeal to go through.
When you're at pre-trial motion hearings and preliminary hearings and the judge has already decided that you're going to get screwed, believe me it becomes 100% clear in a hurry and you've got to make some shitty decisions.
Not to say that I really know anything about what was happening with this guy, but odds are because of the type of charges he saw the writing on the wall just like I did all those years ago and cut the best deal he could.
