Nasty.com sells for $200,000
Domain Sales this year
Diamond.com $7.5 million Blue.com $500,000 Bike.com $500,000 Sex.net $454,500 Nasty.com $200,000 GetMovies.com $75,000 KinkyGirls.com $65,000 Sex.com sold last year for estimated $12+million (source dnjournal) My question is what is the rate of return on investment for these type of domain names? Does anyone know the original sale price for these domains? Does anyone know of a source besides dnjournal for domain sale prices? If you buy an apartment complex for $500,000 you might expect an ___% return on your investment. If you buy GetMovies.com $75,000 what sort of ROI can you expect? Follow up question: Boats.org sells last week for $50,000. Why are these generic domain names selling for such significant sums of money? Thanks in advance.

I can only tell you a bit, more what I've heard than what I know for sure, but ultrahardcore.com sold in the late 90's for about 10 Mil, architecture.com was the biggest seller back then though, for an amount so ridiculous it absolutely amazed me.
sex.com must have spent more on lawyers than was ever seen by any of the owners or alleged owners. Got real nasty. Both adult sites had functioning websites though. The architecture one was just a guy with a bright idea who registered first. In this biz, I don't think domain names count as much as they used to, look at AL4A.com, wtf does that even mean? But it's worth a helluva lot more than nasty.com. I just registered screamingasshole.com, pretty generic, probably use it for a blog, but hey, it's for sale! As are all of my domains for the right price. youngsmut.com 100G's findavagina.com 50G's westcoastsluts.com 30G's eastcoastsluts.com 25G's You get the picture. Great domain names that I'll sell for more than they're worth any day ![]()

I wonder how much firewall.com is worth.
![]() Back in the late 90s, we tried to sell, ultrahardcore, ultrasites, ultrateen...etc. And all members and affiliate program for $10 million. But, there were no takers. Where did you get your information about ultrahardcore? That info is wrong. |

Oh yeah, I bought ultrasites.com back then for $600 just to give you an estimate of what ultrahardcore was really worth. And after it was shut down after I left for not paying hosting and paycom stopped doing payments, ultrahardcore lost all it's members. So, after that happened, it really wasn't worth too much.

You might want to check your facts on this one. The entire ultra* 'empire' was up for sale in Oct 2000 or so (Jim?) and I believe the offer at that time was $10m USD. However, that sale did not go through. Those domains languished for at least 14 more months at which point they were hosted by another adult company until someone exerted a little financial pressure. If he wants to come forward on this, that's up to him.
Later, many of the domains were auctioned off, laughably for pennies of what the original offer was. Here's one thread of some of the drama that ensued http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...hreadid=358501 So, when you look at the asking price for those domains, and note that these were listed in 2004, you might want to do more fact checking. The domains were liquidated, I believe ultrateen.com had a final sales price in the $6k range from what I had heard. That's not to say that there haven't been some decent sales, just that you should take heresay for what it is. Linkster would be able to tell you more about domains and what makes them valuable. Brand awareness is certainly one of them -- webmasters from the late 90s will certainly identify with ultrateen.com, ultrahardcore.com, etc. The trademarkability, or lack of the word being able to be trademarked is pretty important. Nothing like buying a domain for hundreds of thousands only to lose it in a dispute with ICANN. The length of the domain, how common the word is, whether it is spelled correctly, etc. all have impact on how much that domain is worth. Track record of traffic received, how easily the site can be turned into a money source, what the company wants to do with the domain after they've purchased it and how much their brand or advertising expects to make by having a flagship domain. Many high profile domain sales are not all-cash deals either. Many are tied to profits, stocks or grants. I know one domain that was sold to a .com where they were paid with options. After the vesting period, the options were so far underwater that the guy basically gave the domain away. From paper millionaire to working stiff in 366 days. It wouldn't surprise me to see that diamond.com was structured in such a way that the max payout was $7.5m based on sales targets, etc. or in some sort of partnership deal.

Sparky, I posted about the same ultrahardcore info right above you. One thing though... We were told by Sextracker that they could sell the entire Ultra portfolio for $10 million. They could never find a buyer at that price.
Freepictures.com had an offer of $700k for the domain name only. But, while I screamed, take it...another thought it wasn't enough ![]() |

Like I said my memory of it all is a bit foggy and just based on what I heard. I don't know Michel, but he is from my home town and at the time I was thinking it was a success story from one of the poorest areas in the country. I also didn't know about the deceit and financial shenanigans. My apologies if I opened up any old wounds.

![]() However, since he never paid taxes, I'm not sure why that calculation even entered his mind.

And, I didn't know that Sparky. Imagine the different situation both you and I would be in if he did sell it and actually paid me what I would have been owed. I know I could have used the extra $several million back then ![]() This is the very reason I hate it when anyone gets screwed out of any money in this business. Of course, when someone complains about losing less than $100, I kind of have to laugh. As much as I know it's wrong...lose several million dollars and smile ![]() |

You know, I bet after all this has happened, he wishes he just sold when he could and paid me what I was owed. He could have paid his taxes, kept his home, kept his wife and not be known as such a pariah in this business.

other than real one word type domains in my opinion most are worthless except if you're trying to brand a site that is easy to remember and catchy.

I agree with John
![]() and I agree with sheepguy too, all my domains are available at a price. I dont think I will ever outright try to sell one, but if someone emailed me a good offer I would entertain it for sure. Ive just been waiting for that email from someone that wants to buy one of my old sites that I havent touched in 2 years ![]()

I buy domains every now and then
a lot of these prices are artifically inflated to make the buyers and sellers look like players you have to remember most webmasters have the little dick syndrom and feel the need to show off a bit almost everybody in this buisness lies about numbers some deflate them and some inflate them ask somebody on the phone about money or joins if you hear a long pause your getting a short number if they come back with a number really quick and their voice gets louder, its an inflated number

I often turn down offers for Gonzo.com the last one was for 50K. Its more than what its earning for me but the fact that its my online identity and the fact Ive had it since 93. I should just finish off the pay end of it once and for all and see what it will earn that way. |

I get offers for javes.com all the time as well. Sometimes they tell me it's their family name and sometimes they say it's their company name. Although, my company name is Javes, Inc. Everything is for sale but, javes.com would take a lot of changing on my part if I no longer owned the domain.
One thing though...never have I received an offer for goomah.com I had thought with the Sopranos and such, someone would want it. ![]() |

It always amazes me how many people will send you a note saying they want to buy a domain name without ever doing any research at all. We get variations of the "I want to buy your domain" emails all the time asking about fetishclub.com and 99.9% of them have no idea we've had a paysite live on that domain since '97 or that there's an active affiliate program for it. And you have to love the ones who, after being informed of that, they write back asking, "yes, I don't want those, how much for just the domain?"

I bought the domain name haileyrose when my granddaughter was born and never got around to doing anything with it. got a couple e-mails asking if I would sell it, ignored them then got a letter from a proud Granpa whose new granddaughter was also named Hailey Rose emailed the guy told him I'ld let it go for a grand (I'm such a whore), he transferred the cash to me, I sent him and his daughter instructions on how to transfer the domain several times, they never got back to me. It's been a few months now, I still have the domain and the guys $1000. I sure hope his granddaughter is ok.

I have my kids and grandchildren's names as well. But, I couldn't ever sell any of them. Especially not my number 2 daughter's. Not many people have their first name as a domain. Of course, not many people are named Kamica

Alot of TLDs besides .coms have been going for good bucks lately. Dot Infos=reports.info $1,250, law.info $8,495, usawi.info $4000.00, monkey.info $1,653, Leather.info - 5000 EURO ($5,870.02 US), blogger.info $2,000, Newyork.info $27,000, bdi.info $14,796, manhattan.info $1300 sedo then was resold for $4,000 on dnforum! Why are these generic domain names selling for such significant sums of money Because getting a good .com is like hitting the Lottery and every Biz is getting a website so either the Bizzz is reging them or a domain trader is stashing them. A major Media group is filling the air on TV with Zap2it.com and it's picked up close to 3,000,000 listings in Google in a few months.. Watch any domain with Zap2 in it go up in price, Like Zap2hotels.com, zap2travel.com, zap2autos.com or zap2vegas.com for instance.. |
