Mornin' y'all,

Everything else got set aside yesterday to take care of a couple of 'puter emergencies. We take care of the basic IT at the dental office of our friendly neighborhood dentist that lives across the street.

The file server we built for him lost a power supply, easy fix, but we also discovered that the hard drives were 80% full. So a new power supply and a pair of new 750 Gig hard drives (Raid 1) for that box.

While we were at it we also upgraded the primary drive in his bookkeeper's work station, which was so full that the machine would barely boot up.

They're all happy and back in business, but I didn't get any of my own work done. I can't complain though, I do get free dental care out of the deal.

is on, help yourself

One wouldn't think a dentist would need that much hard drive space. Did he ditch his x-ray machine and go for one of those new computer imaging, umm, thingies (yeah I had to bust out the technical term, "thingie" in this description).

There are three dentists in the practice. They take photos with a digital camera that are then uploaded and linked to the patients chart. It's far easier to put up a full screen digital photo to show the patient rather than using mirrors and trying to talk to the patient about treatment with their head back and mouth wide open.

They're still using old-fashioned film x-rays, at least for now. Plans are in the works for converting to digital x-rays, but that system will have it's own storage solution.
