The result was really close, around 50.1% in favour of Independence, 49.9% against. BUT when they calculated the votes via the country the voter lived in, the majority of Scots wanted to remain in the union, but only just (something like 49.5% in favour of Independence, 50,5% against), however English voters were in favour of "throwing the Scots out" (again only just, something like 50.6% in favour of Independence, 49.4%against), so the English "won" it for the Scots!

This was before the financial crash. Next year (when the real referendum happens) it will be worse because a lot of English money is propping up Scotland, and this will cease after Independence. So quite a few Scots who want Independence at some point feel it would be a bad idea right now, while quite a few Englishmen who don't want to see the break up of the union realise it would be financially advisable to "chuck out Scotland"!

I'm amazed, I would have thought that, if both your maternal grandparents are Scottish, you would have automatically got one. If you really want one you could probably appeal. Although maybe wait until after the referendum because they may be thinking that if Scotland goes independent, Scottish people will no longer have UK passports, so descendants thereof will also not be entitled to them.

Actually UK passports are bloody hard to get if you do not have British ancestors, I have plenty of friends who have tried and failed. Most of the "immigrants" you mention do not have UK passports, they are European citizens who can legally treat any EU country as their own, and since pay and conditions are better in Britain, they come over here. This law is an EU law and we are stuck with it because Britain is a member of the EU - Although we are considering having a referendum on leaving that "club" too (but Mr Obama is trying to talk our Prime Minister out of it - seems Obama thinks democracy is only good for US citizens and should not be allowed in other countries).
