Max pic size?

I made one site which I was promoting a softcore photography site. All the pics within the members section (of the site I was promoting) were atleast 150k. So I didnt want to shrink the pictures to 40k and then have someone sign up, then do a chargeback because they're on a dial up modem and cant see any of the pictures.

I know it's a must to build around the people on small screen resolutions, and the dial up people, etc. But it's really becoming a nuissance on my part! lol.
