the software does queries based on keywords they want, runs them through google, extracts the domains, does a whois, tries to grab the contact info and the email address and sends out the link request.
Basically, its no work for them, it generates an FFA link page for them that never will get any traffic and they sucker people into giving them return links. Based on how many of these you get, you can get a rough idea how well you show up in the search engines.

Well actually they sent it to my domain email which is not the same as my whois email... One thing to be very careful of if coming into these kind of cold-call linking arrangements is this; "we've put your link on this page" - go to their site and see if you can find this page from the root index... frequently it won't even be linked from any other part of their site... so they truly are getting something and giving nothing in return...
