FTP Client

After having Cute FTP screw up another 600Mb upload I'm looking for a new FTP client.

What do you use and why?

I've tried the latest version of WS_FTP and I still hate the interface. Then I tried Bullet Proof FTP and it runs 1/2 the speed that all other clients do and support has never reponded.

Any recommendations? All I really want is:

- Decent interface like using F2 to rename and things like that
- Sit in the system tray when closed I don't need it sitting on my desktop all day
- Fast reliable uploads and downloads (Uploads are most important though)
- Restart an upload if it fails.
- A file edit feature is really nice but not needed

Any ideas?

Is there another FTP client besides WSFTP? Now with SSH capabilities.

I'm on day 1,659 of my 30 trial with cute FTP absolutely no problems (other than my screw ups) since I started with it. I tried a couple others but they aren't as easy or quick for me.

I like free If purchasing it would afford me greater options I would, however, I'm very satisfied with the crippleware version.

I tried Leech FTP for a little while. It was super fast, but found it uploading broken images for me for some reason so I went back to WS-FTP Pro. I really do think its the best out there. I think the interface is very useful and intuitive. Plus its rock solid in my experience.

I've used leech for years and it's great! If a file fails to upload after a set amount of tries, it gets moved to the failures section so the rest of your uploads can continue.

LOL
That happened to me when I first downloaded it on my other machine. Was like that forever but when I got this new box last year the trial didn't stay and I had to pay the huge fee of $39.95.

Not that much these days. I did own a bunch back in the nineties, but sold it right after it shot way up and then split. Once in awhile I do something right in the market, but for the most part suck at trading stock. I do make a very nice living supporting Macs for the design studios down here.

What does this have to do with FTP clients, not a fucking thing…

Cute FTP and Pro -
bought, paid for, and still useless, though the only viable alternative right now.
Write one from scratch??? (probably next project)

I use both LeechFTP (no longer made I believe), and FlashFXP. Both are decent, but what I like about LeechFTP is that it allows you to drag-n-drop and then move around the ftp site using another thread!

The only problems I've had with CuteFTP are related to firewalls.

Been using CuteFTP since version 1.6

Hello there everyone!

I've been using a small & powerful FTP client called FlashFXP. It works perfectly fine for me, has a smart and customizable interface, supports SSH and of course download/upload resuming (although some servers may not support upload resuming). It also has a good support for server-to-server transfers (FXP) which can save you a lot of time when backing up things in another server.

I would sure recommend this one to anyone that uses FTP a lot. It's not free, but it's sure worth its price!

Best Regards,

Thiago Dickman

Speaking of ftp clients...I had one once that would transfer from server to server without downloading first thus...making that sort of a transfer blazing fast. Of course it did all the rest of the things FTP clients do but I can't remember the name.

It was really cool back in the day before a new host would move everything for you. I am sure many of you are still using hosts that won't move things for you so see if you can find it. Nothing quite like moving an entire site in seconds

Hey Jim That's exactly what I was saying about FXP (or server-to-server) transfers. Some FTP clients - including the one I recommended, FlashFXP - support this kind of transfer. It's really cool to see those gigs literally flying from one server to another at incredible speeds without taking a byte out of your own bandwidth!

Kind Regards,

Thiago Dickman
