  This was originally pioneered by a bloke called William Burroughs who basically wrote a load of paragraphs about a subject from various peoples point of view on paper and then cut them up into three or four word phrases. When he re-assembled them at random, they started to form new paragraphs which produced a new fresh meaning to the subject. I believe that a lot of Bowie's early lyrics were heavily influenced by this technique.
