I know I'll think of others once I post these, but let's see...

The Lot - a vacant lot where we played war as kids, throwing bottles and rocks for grenades, and using slingshots and bb guns. No one lost an eye, and there were few of the "I shot you!" "You missed!" discussions. (Think of it as an early form of paintball)

The Bunk - a 3-room bunkhouse built behind someone's garage out of a wide variety of quality construction materials originally intended for the apartments being constructed where The Lot used to be. We were older by then, and we needed a place to play our indoor games anyway, but we were a little pissed.

Hilltop - a meeting spot so called 'cause it was the name of the bus stop at the top of the hill. The drivers always loudly called out "Hilltop" when they came to a stop there. Also where the house I grew up in was located.

The Deaf School - actually The Philadelphia School for the Deaf, and it was the answer to "where did you go to watch the fireworks?"

(Down by) The EL - a meeting spot at the closest point to the elevated subway line.

The Main Line - where the rich girls lived; the answer to "where were you last weekend?"

(Down) The Shore - the Jersey beaches (we had names for places down there too).

The Rec - this was the Jardel Recreation Center, which had dances on weekends (that often ended with fights at the bus stops outside later)

Front Street - so called 'cause it was the actual name of the street, but to us it was the local drag strip, with everything from kids with their dads' cars to fuel funny cars and rails showing up late at night.

Okay, enough for now.

talk about a creep down memory lane:

The Frog Lodge: a 3 story green house (the frog part) in the east village where a bunch of kids from Henry street settlement and their parents lived. I think it's now the Hell's angels HQ in Manhattan.

Fulton Fish Market before 230am: from like 9p-230am it was totally deserted but had these huge loading docks under the FDR where we could sit and drink. There was an "old man's bar" across from it that would give us 6 packs 2-go for a tit flash.

China Bowl: 46th and 7th Ave.. "the" place to hang with the drag queens who were oh so happy to have a young female along for the ride.

Carl's around the corner: a little dive bar that was literally around the corner on a residential street. if you knocked on the door and if you were "known" you got in.

Cover's Basement: Every saturday night 5.00 cover charge and all the red stripe and jungle juice you could drink along with pulsing reggae beats and shoulder to shoulder dance floor in the basement of Sedley Cover's house off of Nostrand Ave in Brooklyn.
