What is a hard link exchange?

I've got another newbie question that almost everybody knows, but unfortunately I don't.
What exactly is a hard link exchange or trade and how is it different from just submitting your freesites and putting up a recip?

That's when you put on your main page link to someones main page and he does the same thing.Thats the reciprocal too. If im wrong someone correct me.

Lesa - you're partially correct - it's a link that goes right to the site/domain & not thru a script of some sort that redirects the surfer to the site/domain after it does whatever the script is supposed to do (like a click counting script)

first i have to say it's better not to admit to automatic link generators.

and linkexchange is usefull for your page ranking bij google, yahoo etc.
