My father (and his KKK family members) were born in Birmingham. He left at age 18.. came back at 50 to work in the civil rights movement (thus me living there from 1965-1970) died there, buried there with my mom next to him. Luckily we lived in Huntsville which was filled with "yankees" from the NASA glory days. But the few times i spent more than 3 or 4 days there reminded me of why I don't go to church--EVER. I do agree with you, that one cannot "judge" an entire state based on their leadership alone. There are parts of Nevada that could be interchanged with Gardendale and you'd never know the difference.
