Yes most registrars offer privacy protection and it is indeed 'for real'. If you don't want your details publicly available then you should sign up for it

I thought all registrars were now offering this as a free service. Hosts will vary as to whether or not they pass on the saving.

Whether or not you should buy domains via your host depends upon what other services you want them to provide. My other business is as a non-porn web host. I can tell you there are some things which are just too troublesome if you have to ask the client to start changing dns records and other settings so you can fulfil what they are asking you to do. Far too often they try to "be independent" and just don't know what they are doing. Fine if they are happy to keep it simple, but far too often they get their "advice" from other laymen on non-techie, industry-specific boards.
