After alot of reading im still not sure that a toplist is something that i want to undertake. Time will tell i guess.

Are you referring to an old style toplist - the standalone type - or a list of your top referrers on an existing page? Big difference - although what GG said probably applies to both about blindlinkers, the standalone toplist site can be very good for targetting, but the problem is finding people that still run these to link with.
