you can see if you use a program like chameleon just how many different sizes are used by different sites.
i think if you are thinking of making thumbs for your own hosted galleries then bigger is better in my opinion. bandwidth is far cheaper than it used to be and i think it looks more attractive to the surfer to see a larger image. we use 190 or 200 pixels on our hosted galleries for affiliates to use.
