OK, if I have things straight:
dude puts a link to your blog from his blog then emails you asking for a link back no previous discussion of a link exchange. If that is how it is, then I say he is the one who violated netiquette ... according to old school thought at least. If someone does that to me, I would do as Dunc suggested, and me being me, add in that he is a novice at guilt trips to boot. Proper etiquette as I learned it was if you expected a link back you negotiated that beforehand. Otherwise it was simply a case of blog A linking to something relevant that blogger A liked (sometimes called an "organic" link).
