I used to make a point of going away once a year for a week or two to my father's holiday chalet. It was in the country and on the coast, but in the middle of nowhere. There was no TV, no 'phone and I used to go there without a computer and without even a cell 'phone. I did not even have a car! Just me and a dog. We could walk in the country, walk along the beach, and read old paperbacks. But no tech and no work. If I fancied a drink or a meal, there were two bars about twenty minutes walk away (one in each direction). There was also a small grocery store about twenty minutes walk away too, so I could get food to cook. There was also a bus service into the main town, which ran about once every three hours during the day, so I was not cut off. And if I got desperate for "electronic" entertainment, about half an hours walk got me to a popular seaside resort with cafés, video games, slot (gambolling) machines, and even a small funfair. But mostly it was low tech just walking and reading for a week or two.

Then my dad got a TV in the chalet. I got a cell 'phone and a laptop with mobile broadband, and I started taking these with me. I could work and watch TV. It ruined the bloody holiday.

My father sold the chalet last year, and this year I'm going to go back to the "old ways". A small house in a small village, no TV and no computer. But I will be taking a cell 'phone, and this year I won't be on my own with a dog, I'll be going with my dad. He will be bringing a car.

But it will still mostly be reading and walking with a dog (different dog, my dad's spaniel), and I am looking forward to it. You should try it, it really unwinds you and gets you ready for another year of "the modern world".

But you can't halt technology entirely. Yes I will be reading a lot, but instead of taking a pile of cheap paperbacks got from a secondhand store, as I used to do, I'll be taking a tablet loaded with eBooks.

Ah well as they say: The past is a far away country to which no man may return.
