I'm going to hazzard a guess that the site in question is hosted on Revshare. The reason I guess this is because if something happens to a site, it will usually request the 404 from one of the 5 servers. To a link list operator a 404 is a site that has been taken down, not a server issue. Most server issues just return a DNS error not a 404. I have nothing against Revshare as I use them myself, but I've started to think that for link list submissions, payed hosting may be the way to go. I understand that Revshare isn't actually free, but as you said, when it is your income that is concerned, with paid hosting you actually have some say over things, and you know when you have server issues that it isn't going to send out a 404.

Just my 2 cents.
